Advancer- Baylor's 101st Homecoming Weekend

Spirit and excitement fill the air in Waco as Baylor gears up for their 101st Homecoming Celebration.   Baylor Homecoming is filled with long standing traditions and lots of Sic 'Em sprit. The festivities begin at 7 pm on October 21 in Waco Hall where the first night of Pig Skin kicks off.  Pig Skin is a theatrical production featuring the top acts from All-University Sing the previous spring.  The performances are put on by Baylor organizations, complete with costumes, lights, backdrops, and dance routines.  "Pigskin is a spectacular show, the students work extremely hard and it shows," said Senior Megan Mendelson.  Tickets for Pigskin can be purchased at Baylor’s Student Union Building, ranging in price from $16 to $24.  There will be three other performances of Pigskin throughout the weekend, 6:30 pm and 10:30 pm on Friday and 7 pm Saturday.

The tradition of the bonfire started in 1946 when freshmen held guard during the five nights before the Homecoming game to prevent the Texas A&M Aggies from painting the campus or kidnapping Chita, the new bear mascot.  A bonfire was lit every night in different locations around campus, with Friday night’s being the climax.  The extravaganza begins at 6 pm Friday October 22 on Fountain Mall where there will be rides, face painting, and food.  Later in the night at 9 pm the pep rally begins, igniting the Baylor spirit for Saturday’s football game.  "I always enjoy attending the bonfire because the school comes together to support our Bears with lots of spirit," said Senior Alex Bell.  The large bonfire will be lit as students gather around to cheer and ‘sic em’ with fellow students.

The Homecoming parade is the highlight of the weekend, being said it is one of the largest collegiate parades.  The Baylor Golden Wave band leads the parade through downtown Waco finishing down 5th street on campus.  Around the 1950s the tradition began of making floats themed on Baylor beating the opponent in the Homecoming football game.  "We love the creativity that is shown through the floats in the parade, they keep getting better and better each year, " said the Homecoming Committee.  Student organizations take part in a competition that is split up into classes: A, B, and C.  Class is based on the organization's budget for the float.  Floats are judged the morning of the parade; rankings and trophies are given to the best floats.  "Our organization spends a lot of time preparing for our float to be in the parade, it is an exciting experience to be a part of," said Kappa Delta float-chair Jackie Rosas.  Waco groups such as soccer teams and Kings Club take part in the parade as well.  It begins at 8:30 am Saturday October 23 on Washington Avenue downtown.

The Baylor Bear’s will be facing the Kansas State Wildcats in the Homecoming Football Game.  Fans will fill Floyd Casey Stadium Saturday at 2 pm to watch the two teams take the field.   Many parents and alumni come to town for Homecoming weekend, making it a high attendance game.  Robert Griffin hopes to bring home a win for the Bears and all their fans.  Tickets to the game can be purchased through Baylor's website or student's can pick up their free ticket at the Student Union Building.  A strong team and lots of support form Baylor fans will hopefully lead the Bears to a win Homecoming weekend.
